Romans 10:14–21
14How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher?
15And how will they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:
16But they didn’t all listen to the glad news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”
17So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
18But I say, didn’t they hear? Yes, most certainly,
19But I ask, didn’t Israel know? First Moses says,
20Isaiah is very bold and says,
21But about Israel he says, “All day long I stretched out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.”

Reflection
In Romans 10 Paul lays out a simple, surprising chain: people call on Jesus only if they believe; they believe only if they hear; they hear only if someone proclaims; and proclamation comes from those who are sent. That logic places the work of faith squarely in the realm of proclamation and sending. Faith is not a private, isolated experience—it is born where God's Word is carried into people's ears and hearts.
But Paul faces two tensions. First, not everyone who hears embraces the good news. Even when the message is proclaimed, some reject it. Paul points back to the prophets who foresaw disbelief and to the painful reality that many resisted God's voice. Second, Paul insists that God has been reaching out: through law, the prophets, and creation God's message has gone out. Yet hearing does not guarantee faith; human hearts can be stubborn.
These truths shape how we live as followers of Jesus. On one side, we are not the Author of saving faith. We do not manufacture belief by clever words or pressure. Ultimately, faith is God’s gift—born when the Holy Spirit uses the Word to open a heart. That gives us humility: we speak not to coerce, but to witness.
On the other side, Paul's logic gives evangelism and discipleship a central, unavoidable place. If faith comes by hearing, then faithful proclamation matters. People need to hear the Name, the story, the claims of Christ, and the invitation to call on him. Being sent is not optional; it is how God chooses to bring faith to people.
So what does faithful, Word-centered hearing look like in daily life? It’s clear, compassionate proclamation of the gospel—spoken in ordinary conversations, anchored in Scripture, and offered alongside prayer. It’s also patience in the face of resistance: some will not listen now, but God’s patient, stretched-out hands keep inviting. We must persist without becoming harsh, trust the Spirit to convert, and continue to send and support those who carry the message.
There is hope in Paul’s words. The pathway to faith—hearing the Word—is open. We can bring the Word; God can convert. That means ordinary believers have a remarkable role: to speak, to send, to pray, and to trust that God will use these means to bring people into life-giving faith.
Putting Faith Into Action
- Prepare a short, clear gospel summary (30–60 seconds) you can share in natural conversation; practice it so you can present the essentials humbly and lovingly.
- Identify one person or community to pray for this week; send a message, invite them to hear a Bible-based resource, or offer to read Scripture together and ask God to open their heart.
- Support or join a sent worker or local church outreach effort—give financially, encourage, or volunteer—so more people can hear the Word where they live.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you that faith is born when your Word meets a listening heart. Give us the courage to speak plainly and the patience to love those who resist. Send your Spirit to open ears and soften hearts. Use our words, our prayers, and our support to bring people to call on your name. Amen.

1Brothers, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved.
2For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
3For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they didn’t subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
4For Christ is the fulfillment of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
5For Moses writes about the righteousness of the law, “The one who does them will live by them.”
6But the righteousness which is of faith says this, “Don’t say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down);
7or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.)”
8But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart;” that is, the word of faith which we preach:
9that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
10For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation.
11For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.”
12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich to all who call on him.
13For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
