2 Corinthians 9:6–11

WEB

6Remember this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

7Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work.

9As it is written,

10Now may he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness,

11you being enriched in everything for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us.

Reflection

Paul's words in this passage turn a simple agricultural truth into a spiritual principle: what we invest—whether money, time, mercy, or praise—will bear fruit. He begins with a clear contrast: stingy sowing produces a meager harvest; generous sowing produces abundance. But the focus is not on manipulating God for personal gain. Instead, Paul points us to the posture of the heart that honors God and blesses others.

Generosity in this section is voluntary, thoughtful, and joyful. Paul insists that each person decide in their heart how to give, not out of pressure or reluctance. God values the inner motive: giving that is cheerful reflects trust in God’s care and a desire to participate in his work. This frees us from legalistic checklists or performance-based guilt; God is concerned with the heart that trusts and delights in sharing.

At the same time Paul reassures believers that generosity does not mean scarcity. God provides the resources and grace needed so we can continue doing good. He supplies seed for the sower and multiplies what is given so that the work of righteousness increases. The aim is not personal enrichment as an end in itself, but that God would be glorified—our generosity produces thanksgiving to God through the lives changed and the witness it creates.

That truth changes how we approach giving. First, it frees us from a scarcity mindset. When we trust that God supplies and multiplies, we move from hoarding to stewarding what we’ve been given. Second, it keeps our motives in check. Giving becomes an act of worship and solidarity, not a means to self-promotion. Third, it enlarges our imagination for kingdom work: small, sacrificial gifts offered in faith can lead to multiplied impact beyond what we see.

If you struggle with fear about giving, start small and faithful. Let your decisions be prayerful and deliberate, not impulsive or coerced. If you feel you have little to give financially, remember that time, encouragement, skills, and hospitality are also seed. As you practice cheerful generosity, God’s grace can increase your capacity to do good and create opportunities for thanksgiving to him.

Generosity is both a discipline and a grace. We sow not simply to get more, but to join God’s redemptive work, trusting that he who supplies seed will also provide for the sowing and multiply the fruit for his glory.

Putting Faith Into Action

  1. Pray and prepare a simple giving plan this week: decide in your heart an amount or regular gift and why you are giving it, then follow through without regret or compulsion.
  2. If finances are tight, commit to giving time or skills—volunteer with a local ministry, write notes of encouragement, or share a meal—sowing where you are able.
  3. Practice cheerful giving by tithing a small, intentional portion of unexpected income (a bonus, refund, or gift) and record how God uses it; review annually to grow in trust and generosity.

Prayer

Father, thank you for the grace that supplies our needs and enables us to give. Help us decide in our hearts to give without grudging or pressure, trusting you to multiply what we offer for your kingdom. Grow in us a cheerful, steadfast generosity that brings thanksgiving to you. In Jesus' name, amen.

1It is indeed unnecessary for me to write to you concerning the service to the saints,

2for I know your readiness, of which I boast on your behalf to those of Macedonia, that Achaia has been prepared for the past year. Your zeal has stirred up very many of them.

3But I have sent the brothers so that our boasting on your behalf may not be in vain in this respect, that, just as I said, you may be prepared,

4lest by any means, if anyone from Macedonia comes there with me and finds you unprepared, we (to say nothing of you) would be disappointed in this confident boasting.

5I thought it necessary therefore to entreat the brothers that they would go before to you and arrange ahead of time the generous gift that you promised before, that the same might be ready as a matter of generosity, and not of greediness.

12For this service of giving that you perform not only makes up for lack among the saints, but abounds also through much giving of thanks to God,

13seeing that through the proof given by this service, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the Good News of Christ and for the generosity of your contribution to them and to all,

14while they themselves also, with supplication on your behalf, yearn for you by reason of the exceeding grace of God in you.

15Now thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift!
