1 Corinthians 16:19–24

WEB

19The assemblies of Asia greet you. Aquila and Priscilla greet you warmly in the Lord, together with the assembly that is in their house.

20All the brothers greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss.

21This greeting is by me, Paul, with my own hand.

22If any man doesn’t love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be cursed. Come, Lord!

23The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

24My love to all of you in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Reflection

Paul’s final lines to the Corinthians read like the heart of a pastor who has seen both the beauty and the brokenness of church life. He names the simple network of relationships that held the gospel together—house churches, faithful couples like Aquila and Priscilla, brothers and sisters who greeted one another—and he signs off with words that reveal what matters most: love in Christ Jesus.

There are three intertwined realities in this short closing. First, Christian love is practical and communal. Paul mentions assemblies and a household church to show that faith is lived in shared life. Hospitality and warm greetings are not trivial niceties; they are the means by which the gospel is embodied. When believers open homes, offer welcome, and make space for one another, they give tangible proof that Jesus reigns among them.

Second, love is personal and authentic. Paul adds his own handwriting to the greeting. That personal touch reminds us that Christian ministry is not merely organizational; it is relational. The gospel moves through real people who care enough to write, visit, encourage, and risk vulnerability. Our relationships—letters, calls, visits, small sacrifices—authenticate our words about Christ.

Third, love has moral and eternal urgency. Paul’s sharp warning about those who do not love the Lord and his cry Come, Lord! (Maranatha) push us beyond comfortable sentiment. True Christian identity is defined by allegiance to Jesus. There must be a living love for the Lord, not only warm fellowship. The warning is a pastoral alarm against empty profession; the longing for Christ’s return is the hope that sustains and purifies that love.

These strands—hospitality, personal authenticity, and a Christ-centered, urgent love—together shape what it means to live differently as a church. Grace and love close the letter. Paul does not leave them with rules but with a posture: rely on the grace of Jesus, love one another in him, and keep longing for his return. That posture changes how we greet, how we welcome, how we test our hearts.

If we take Paul seriously, our gatherings will be warm and welcoming, our ministry will carry the weight of personal commitment, and our faith will be marked by an honest devotion to Christ. Love in Christ Jesus is not a slogan; it is a way of life that shows itself in small, faithful acts and in a soul set toward the Lord’s coming.

Putting Faith Into Action

  1. Practice a culturally appropriate, affectionate greeting when you arrive at your next church gathering—look for ways to make newcomers feel genuinely seen and welcomed.
  2. Write one personal note, text, or make one call this week to encourage a believer who has been overlooked; let your handwriting or voice show that you care personally about them.
  3. Examine your allegiance to Jesus by asking: Do I love the Lord more than comfort, reputation, or convenience? If not, confess, repent, and make one concrete change to realign your life with Christ (prayer rhythms, Scripture time, or sacrificial service).

Prayer

Lord Jesus, make our love for you real and visible. Teach us to welcome one another in ways that point to your grace. Keep us from shallow profession and give us longing for your return. Fill our gatherings with genuine affection and our lives with faithful witness. Amen.

1Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I commanded the assemblies of Galatia, you do likewise.

2On the first day of every week, let each one of you save as he may prosper, that no collections are made when I come.

3When I arrive, I will send whoever you approve with letters to carry your gracious gift to Jerusalem.

4If it is appropriate for me to go also, they will go with me.

5I will come to you when I have passed through Macedonia, for I am passing through Macedonia.

6But with you it may be that I will stay with you, or even winter with you, that you may send me on my journey wherever I go.

7For I do not wish to see you now in passing, but I hope to stay a while with you, if the Lord permits.

8But I will stay at Ephesus until Pentecost,

9for a great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.

10Now if Timothy comes, see that he is with you without fear, for he does the work of the Lord, as I also do.

11Therefore let no one despise him. But set him forward on his journey in peace, that he may come to me; for I expect him with the brothers.

12Now concerning Apollos the brother, I strongly urged him to come to you with the brothers, but it was not at all his desire to come now; but he will come when he has an opportunity.

13Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong!

14Let all that you do be done in love.

15Now I beg you, brothers—you know the house of Stephanas, that it is the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have set themselves to serve the saints—

16that you also be in subjection to such, and to everyone who helps in the work and labors.

17I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus; for that which was lacking on your part, they supplied.

18For they refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge those who are like that.

Amen.
