John 15:18–27

WEB

18If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.

19If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

20Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

21But they will do all these things to you for my name’s sake, because they don’t know him who sent me.

22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.

23He who hates me, hates my Father also.

24If I hadn’t done among them the works which no one else did, they wouldn’t have had sin. But now they have seen and also hated both me and my Father.

25But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which was written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’

26“When the Counselor has come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me.

27You will also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

Reflection

Jesus tells his disciples bluntly: rejection and hostility from the world are to be expected. He does not sugarcoat the cost of following him. The disciples are reminded that the hostility they will face is not a failure of their faith or an indication that God has abandoned them; it is the same opposition Jesus experienced because they belong to him and have been chosen out of the world. This is a solemn comfort. When hate comes, it identifies us with Christ rather than proving God’s displeasure.

There are two reasons Jesus gives for this hatred. First, because his followers are not of the world, they stand apart from worldly patterns and allegiances. Second, many who oppose Jesus do so out of ignorance of the Father; their rejection is rooted in spiritual blindness, not always in measured judgment. That doesn’t excuse sin, but it explains the cause: they do not know the One who sent Jesus. In the face of such hostility, Jesus points ahead to Scripture that spoke of being hated without cause—again showing that suffering for the mission of God is part of the story he came to fulfill.

And here is the hope that steadies a frightened heart: Jesus does not leave his people alone. He promises to send the Counselor, the Spirit of truth, from the Father. The Spirit will testify about Jesus, and he will be with believers to remind, convict, guide, and enable. In other words, when the world resists and misunderstands, God’s Spirit testifies to the truth of who Jesus is and equips his followers to testify as well. The Spirit provides presence and power: presence to comfort and confirm that Christ is with us, and power to speak, witness, and persevere.

So faithfulness in a hostile world has two arms: identification with Christ (we are not surprised by opposition because it marks us as his) and dependence on the Spirit (we are not left defenseless because the Counselor testifies for the truth and strengthens our witness). This passage calls us to realistic courage—expect opposition, refuse to be driven by fear or bitterness, and rely on the Spirit to witness through us.

Practically, that means we do not hide from conflict by abandoning our witness; we also do not respond with retaliation. We remain rooted in Christ, speak the truth in love, pray for those who oppose us, and trust the Spirit to do the convicting work that only God can do. The Spirit’s testimony and our faithful presence may not win every heart, but they keep us faithful to Jesus and effective in the mission he gave us.

Putting Faith Into Action

  1. When you face hostility for your faith, quietly remind yourself that opposition can be a mark of following Christ. Pray: "Lord, help me endure and honor you." Keep a short list of Scriptures that confirm your identity in Christ and read them when discouraged.
  2. Prepare a one-minute testimony describing what Jesus has done in your life and be ready to share it calmly when asked. Practice relying on the Spirit to give you words rather than forcing an argument.
  3. This week, identify one person who misunderstands or opposes your faith. Pray for them daily, and look for one small practical way to bless them (a note, a helpful service, or an encouraging word) as a witness of Christ’s love.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, when the world rejects me, remind me that I belong to you. Send your Spirit to speak through me, to give courage, wisdom, and love. Keep me faithful without bitterness, bold without harshness, and always dependent on you. Use my life to testify to your truth. Amen.

1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer.

2Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

3You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

4Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.

5I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

6If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

7If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

8“In this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.

9Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.

10If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.

11I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.

12“This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.

13Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

14You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.

15No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

16You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

17“I command these things to you, that you may love one another.

18If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.

19If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
