Mark 16:9–20

WEB

9Now when he had risen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.

10She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

11When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they disbelieved.

12After these things he was revealed in another form to two of them as they walked, on their way into the country.

13They went away and told it to the rest. They didn’t believe them, either.

14Afterward he was revealed to the eleven themselves as they sat at the table; and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they didn’t believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

15He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to the whole creation.

16He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who disbelieves will be condemned.

17These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new languages;

18they will take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it will in no way hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

19So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.

20They went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.

Reflection

When Jesus rose from the dead, his first appearances focused on broken, repentant, and hurting people. Mary Magdalene, freed from demons, is the first to see him. Others who saw him were disbelieved; even the eleven were rebuked for hardness of heart when they would not accept the testimony of those who had seen the risen Lord. Out of that mix of grief, surprise, and stubborn unbelief Jesus issues a simple, sovereign commission: go and proclaim the good news to everyone.

The resurrection is not only proof that Jesus conquered death; it is the basis for mission. Because he is alive, his words carry authority and his people can be sent. He calls his followers into relationship — believing and being baptized — and he gives them a task: tell the world the story of what God has done in Christ. That call does not come with a promise of an untroubled life. It comes with power that equips witness and often confirmation through signs. The passage testifies that the Lord worked with the apostles and confirmed the message as they obeyed and went out. God’s presence does not remove difficulty; it enables faithful action in the face of doubt, opposition, and weakness.

We should also notice Jesus’ patience and honesty. He rebuked unbelief gently but firmly; he did not reward it with excuses. The disciples’ hesitation shows how easy it is to let fear, grief, or human skepticism silence the testimony God means to spread. Yet the risen Lord keeps calling. The sequence — seeing, believing, being sent — shows that mission flows from encounter: those who have been met by Christ become bearers of the message.

The signs mentioned in Mark are not a checklist for proving faith. They describe how, in the early movement, God confirmed the gospel in tangible ways — deliverance, healing, and unusual demonstrations of power. For us, the core remains the proclamation of the good news and lives changed by faith. Where God grants signs, they serve the message; where he does not, the gospel still stands, validated by transformed lives and steadfast witness.

This passage urges courage and clarity. The risen Lord sends imperfect people into a world that will sometimes refuse to believe, yet he equips and accompanies his witnesses. Our confidence is not in our eloquence or power but in the living Christ who sends us and who is at work even when results are slow or hard to see. Obedience to his commission — going where he calls, speaking the gospel, and caring for those in need — is the faithful response of those who have been known and forgiven by him.

Putting Faith Into Action

  1. Tell the resurrection story to one person this week. Share briefly what Jesus has done for you and invite conversation; do not wait for perfect words—let the fact that he is risen shape the conversation.
  2. If you have not been baptized as a public sign of belonging to Christ, talk with your pastor or a mature believer about taking that step. If you are already baptized, encourage or mentor someone preparing for baptism.
  3. Pray for boldness to witness and for God to work through you, and be ready to serve practically — visit the sick, bring a meal, or pray for neighbors. Rely on God’s presence rather than on a need for signs, and avoid taking reckless risks to “prove” God’s protection.

Prayer

Risen Lord, thank you that you are alive and that you send us with your message. Give us faith to believe, courage to speak, and compassion to serve. Work with us by your Spirit so that our words and lives point others to you. Help us to obey without demanding signs, trusting you to confirm your word as you will. Amen.

1When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint him.

2Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.

3They were saying among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?”

4for it was very big. Looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back.

5Entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed.

6He said to them, “Don’t be amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him!

7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He goes before you into Galilee. There you will see him, as he said to you.’ ”

8They went out, and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had come on them. They said nothing to anyone; for they were afraid.

19So then the Lord, after he had spoken to them, was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
