Ephesians 6:10–17
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
11Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace,
16above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.
17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

Reflection
Paul closes his letter to the Ephesians with a call that is both urgent and encouraging: be strong in the Lord and put on the whole armor of God. He does not tell us to muster our own moral willpower or polish an outward image of strength. The source of strength is personal: in the Lord and in the strength of his might. The armor is not jewelry to be admired; it is equipment to be worn in dependence on God.
When Paul says our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, he reframes conflict. The real battle is spiritual: against principalities, powers, world-rulers of darkness, and spiritual forces of wickedness. That truth keeps us from treating people as our primary enemies. Our posture is defensive and active—’that you may be able to stand’ and ‘to withstand in the evil day’—not passive avoidance. Standing requires preparation and the right gear.
Each piece of armor Paul names is practical and gospel-shaped. The belt of truth holds everything together. Truth begins with who God is and who we are in Christ; it is the daily refusal of lies—about God’s goodness, about our identity, and about the enemy’s power. The breastplate of righteousness protects the heart; not because our own goodness shields us, but because Christ’s righteousness covers us and changes how we live. Fitted feet with the readiness of the Good News remind us that the gospel brings peace and motivates our movement—both to stand firm and to go where God sends.
The shield of faith is a communal, living trust in God that extinguishes the enemy’s flaming assaults—doubt, accusation, fear. The helmet of salvation guards our minds by keeping our hope anchored in what Christ has accomplished. Finally, the sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—is both defensive and offensive: it exposes lies and advances God’s truth into the places we are tempted to cede.
Putting on this armor is more than mental assent; it’s habitual dependence. We put on truth by rehearsing Scripture, we wear righteousness through repentance and obedience, we prepare our feet by rehearsing the gospel in our hearts, we lift the shield of faith by trusting God in concrete circumstances, we secure the helmet by reminding ourselves daily of salvation, and we wield the sword by speaking God’s Word in temptation and witness. This is not self-help theology—it's the Spirit enabling believers to stand. Because the strength is in the Lord, we can face opposition with hope, clarity, and courage.
Putting Faith Into Action
- Begin your day with an 'armor check': 1–2 minutes of truth (a verse or claim about who God is), a quick confession of sin to put on the breastplate of righteousness, and a declaration of trust for a current concern to raise your shield of faith.
- Prepare a simple, two-sentence gospel readiness you can share when asked why you hope: practice it until it feels natural so your feet are fitted with readiness to give the Good News of peace.
- Memorize one short passage of Scripture to use as your sword in temptation and trial. When fear or accusation comes, speak that verse aloud to yourself and ask the Spirit to apply it.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, strengthen me in your might. Help me to put on the whole armor you provide—give me the truth to stand firm, the righteousness that guards my heart, readiness to share your peace, faith that extinguishes fear, the assurance of salvation for my mind, and your Word to speak against the enemy. Keep me dependent on you, not my own strength. Amen.

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2“Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise:
3“that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.”
4You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
5Servants, be obedient to those who according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as to Christ,
6not in the way of service only when eyes are on you, as men pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,
7with good will doing service as to the Lord and not to men,
8knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive the same good again from the Lord, whether he is bound or free.
9You masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him.
17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
18with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints.
19Pray for me, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News,
20for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
21But that you also may know my affairs, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make known to you all things.
22I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know our state and that he may comfort your hearts.
23Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
24Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible love. Amen.
