Ephesians 3:1–6
1For this cause I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles,
2if it is so that you have heard of the administration of that grace of God which was given me toward you,
3how that by revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I wrote before in few words,
4by which, when you read, you can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ,
5which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit,
6that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News,

Reflection
Paul begins this section not with theology alone but with a posture: he is “the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles.” That phrase tells us two important things about the ministry of the gospel. First, service to the gospel can cost us comfort and freedom. Second, that cost is taken on out of love for people whom God has included in his purposes.
Paul describes his work as an administration of grace given to him so that a truth once hidden is now revealed by the Spirit. When Paul calls it a “mystery,” he does not mean a secret kept from God; he means a truth God kept hidden until the appointed time and then revealed to his apostles and prophets. The mystery God revealed is simple and staggering: the Gentiles (that is, those once excluded from God’s covenant people) are now fellow heirs, fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of God’s promise in Christ through the gospel.
This revelation reshapes how we see ourselves and each other. Before Christ, divisions of ethnicity, status, or background defined belonging. In Christ, those dividing lines are not erased by force but transformed by grace. We belong together not because we leveled one another but because we share one Savior, one inheritance, one Spirit. The unity is real and costly—Paul’s imprisonment is a sober reminder—but it is also sure: God has promised it.
Practically this means the church is called to embody a visible, tangible unity that reflects God’s revealed purpose. When we gather, we gather as heirs, not guests. When we serve one another, we do it as members of one body, recognizing that Christ has given each of us gifts and a place. When we share the gospel, we do it as stewards of a promise that includes all who repent and believe.
If you are new to faith, hear this as good news: you are not an outsider trying to earn access to God. In Christ you have full belonging. If you have followed Jesus many years, take Paul’s example as a call: the mystery’s stewardship rests with us. We must proclaim it, live it out, and bear its cost if unity requires sacrifice.
Because the mystery is a gift revealed in the Spirit, our unity depends on prayerful humility and dependence on the Spirit’s work, not human programs alone. Let the truth that we are fellow heirs and fellow partakers shape how you welcome others, use your gifts, and share the gospel that brings people into this one body with one promise.
Putting Faith Into Action
- Invite and include: this week intentionally invite someone from a different background, culture, or generation into your home group, meal, or regular fellowship and listen to their story as a way of practicing belonging.
- Live like a member: identify one way you can use your gifts to serve within your local church (teaching, hospitality, mercy, maintenance) and commit to it for three months to strengthen the body.
- Proclaim the promise: share the simple gospel with at least one person and explain that in Christ they become a fellow heir—then pray with them that the Holy Spirit would reveal this mystery to their heart.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for including me in your family. Help me live as one who belongs—welcoming others, serving my brothers and sisters, and proclaiming the good news that unites us. Fill me with the Spirit so your revealed promise shapes every relationship. Amen.

1For this cause I, Paul, am the prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles,
2if it is so that you have heard of the administration of that grace of God which was given me toward you,
3how that by revelation the mystery was made known to me, as I wrote before in few words,
4by which, when you read, you can perceive my understanding in the mystery of Christ,
5which in other generations was not made known to the children of men, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit,
6that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of his promise in Christ Jesus through the Good News,
7of which I was made a servant according to the gift of that grace of God which was given me according to the working of his power.
8To me, the very least of all saints, was this grace given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
9and to make all men see what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God, who created all things through Jesus Christ,
10to the intent that now through the assembly the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places,
11according to the eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12In him we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.
13Therefore I ask that you may not lose heart at my troubles for you, which are your glory.
14For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
16that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person,
17that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
18may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth,
19and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
20Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
21to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
