1 Thessalonians 1:6–10

WEB

6You became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit,

7so that you became an example to all who believe in Macedonia and in Achaia.

8For from you the word of the Lord has been declared, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone out, so that we need not say anything.

9For they themselves report concerning us what kind of a reception we had from you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God,

10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead: Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.

Reflection

Paul praises the Thessalonians for a faith that was both costly and contagious. They imitated Paul and, more importantly, the Lord by receiving the gospel amid much affliction while living with the joy given by the Holy Spirit (v.6). That joy does not remove hardship; it reorients believers to God’s presence and power within suffering. Their transformed lives became a clear, public witness: believers in Macedonia and Achaia recognized their example, and the word of the Lord spread from them (vv.7–8). Reports described how they turned from idols to serve the living and true God and how they waited for God’s Son, whom he raised from the dead — Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come (vv.9–10). Jesus is central here: his resurrection grounds the community’s hope and shapes their waiting. The passage calls us to receive God’s word amid trials, allow the Spirit to cultivate sustaining joy, abandon false securities that compete with God, and live visibly so others see and are drawn to Christ while we wait confidently for his return.

Putting Faith Into Action

  1. Read 1 Thessalonians 1:6–10 slowly and journal one specific way God calls you to imitate Christ this week (in a relationship, at work, or in suffering). Commit that to prayer and one concrete step you will take.
  2. In a small group, read the passage aloud and discuss how joy in the Spirit sustained the Thessalonians amid affliction; identify one visible action your group can take this month to serve your neighborhood as a faithful witness.
  3. Practice a seventy-two-hour “witness audit:” for three days record one tangible way your words or actions either point others to Christ or to idols. At the end, confess where needed, ask the Spirit for joy and courage, and plan one corrective habit to cultivate consistent witness.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you that your resurrection is the center of our hope. Help us receive your word even in trials, fill us with the joy of your Spirit, and give us courage to turn from false securities and serve you alone. Make our lives a faithful witness so others may know you. Keep our eyes fixed on your coming. Amen.

1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the assembly of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2We always give thanks to God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers,

3remembering without ceasing your work of faith and labor of love and perseverance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father.

4We know, brothers loved by God, that you are chosen,

5and that our Good News came to you not in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and with much assurance. You know what kind of men we showed ourselves to be among you for your sake.
