1 Peter 1:22–25
22Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth through the Spirit in sincere brotherly affection, love one another from the heart fervently,
23having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and remains forever.
24For,
25but the Lord’s word endures forever.”

Reflection
Peter draws a direct line from our purification to our practice. He says that because God has purified our souls—through obedience to the truth by the Spirit—we are to love one another from the heart, fervently. That is not a call to mere outward civility or religious duty. It is a summons to a deep, sincere affection that flows from a changed nature. The motive and power for this love are not our willpower but what has already happened to us: we have been born again through the living, enduring word of God.
Being “born again” is not an abstract theological idea here; it is the explanation of why sincere love is possible. Birth changes who you are. The newborn doesn’t pretend to be loving; the new nature expresses affection naturally. Peter reminds us that this new birth did not come from corruptible seed but from an incorruptible seed—the Word of God—which “lives and remains forever.” The Gospel that brought us to life continues to live and work in us. Because the word that gave us life endures, the love it produces is meant to be lasting and genuine.
Notice the pathway Peter gives: truth + Spirit + obedience = purified souls. Purification isn’t a one-time polishing; it’s ongoing: the Spirit brings the truth of the Word into our hearts, we respond in obedient trust, and hearts are shaped to love. The result is brotherly affection that is sincere—not hypocritical—and fervent, not lukewarm. That intensity is not showy emotion but a committed, energetic love that seeks the good of others.
Practically, this means two things. First, strengthen your relationship to God’s living word. The same Word that births us sustains and transforms our affections. Read it, listen to it, let it shape your thinking so the Spirit’s work can continue. Second, let the evidence of your new birth be visible in how you treat other believers. Ask whether your words and actions reflect a heart that has been purified. If not, confess, repent, and return to the Word that renews.
There is hope here for failure and weakness. If your love feels small or inconsistent, you are not beyond restoration. The incorruptible seed that birthed you still lives and remains. It can and will revive your love, re-form your affections, and enable a sincere, fervent care for brothers and sisters in Christ. Stand firm in that grace: it both begins and sustains the Christian life, and it empowers the kind of love the church needs.
Putting Faith Into Action
- Set aside 20–30 minutes this week to read the Gospel (e.g., one chapter slowly), asking the Spirit to remind you of your new birth and to stir genuine love for a specific brother or sister in your church.
- Identify one person in your Christian community who needs encouragement or practical help. Send a note, make a call, or arrange a visit and perform a concrete act of service (bring a meal, help with a task) that demonstrates sincere, sacrificial love.
- When conflict or irritation arises with another believer, pause and ask: Has my soul been purified by obedience to the truth in this moment? Confess the hardness you find, ask the Spirit to renew your heart, and take one small, humble step toward reconciliation (apologize, listen, or offer forgiveness).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for birthing us by your living, enduring word. Purify our hearts by your Spirit so our love for one another is sincere and fervent. When our affection is weak or selfish, revive us by your Word and help us show practical, humble love to the brothers and sisters you have given us. Amen.

1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen ones who are living as foreigners in the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with his blood: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that doesn’t fade away, reserved in Heaven for you,
5who by the power of God are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved in various trials,
7that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes, even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—
8whom, not having known, you love. In him, though now you don’t see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy that is unspeakable and full of glory,
9receiving the result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
10Concerning this salvation, the prophets sought and searched diligently. They prophesied of the grace that would come to you,
11searching for who or what kind of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them pointed to when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow them.
12To them it was revealed that they served not themselves, but you, in these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the Good News to you by the Holy Spirit sent out from heaven; which things angels desire to look into.
13Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober, and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ—
14as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance,
15but just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior,
16because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
17If you call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judges according to each man’s work, pass the time of your living as foreigners here in reverent fear,
18knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things like silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers,
19but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ,
20who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in this last age for your sake,
21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope might be in God.
