1 Peter 1:10–12

WEB

10Concerning this salvation, the prophets sought and searched diligently. They prophesied of the grace that would come to you,

11searching for who or what kind of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them pointed to when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow them.

12To them it was revealed that they served not themselves, but you, in these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the Good News to you by the Holy Spirit sent out from heaven; which things angels desire to look into.

Reflection

Peter draws our attention to a surprising truth: the salvation we now enjoy was longed for and investigated by the prophets. They didn’t write primarily for their own fame or comfort. Inspired by the Spirit, they looked forward, trying to understand the timing and shape of what God would accomplish in Christ—his sufferings and the glory that would follow. That forward-looking gaze helps us see our salvation not as an isolated event but as the climax of God’s unfolding plan. It is both promise fulfilled and inheritance received.

Notice three things Peter emphasizes that shape how we should treasure the gospel. First, the prophets sought and searched diligently. They were sincere students of God’s revelation—careful, hungry, persistent. Their labor reminds us that faith is not cheap curiosity but a committed pursuit. Second, the Spirit was active in their searching: the Spirit of Christ pointed forward to the gospel realities they could not fully grasp. This tells us that God’s revelation often comes across generations: what God began to show through the prophets reaches completion in Christ and continues to be made known by the Holy Spirit to us now. Third, these revelations were not ultimately for the prophets themselves but for us—the later receivers of the good news—and even the angels long to look into these things. That thought should fill us with humility and awe. We are beneficiaries of divine intent and cosmic attention.

Practically, treasuring this salvation means letting it reshape how we live. If the prophets searched for it, we should cultivate a hunger for it: not a mere intellectual assent but a daily valuing of the cross and the resurrection. If the Spirit reveals and applies this good news, we should pray for the Spirit’s help to understand, to repent, and to bear fruit. And if we are the recipients who stand on the shoulders of long-awaited promises, we should steward the gospel faithfully—telling others, living consistently, and honoring those who taught us.

The praise of angels also encourages us. They do not experience redemption as we do; yet they look in with intense interest. Our salvation is both ordinary (it meets sinners) and extraordinary (it draws heavenly attention). Let that reality increase your worship and your urgency to share. When you face trials, remember this salvation was foreseen across ages and is sustained by God’s faithfulness; when you grow complacent, recall that you are part of a story that the prophets and the angels longed to see.

Treasure the gospel as the fulfillment of God’s promise, rely on the Spirit who continues to reveal it, and live as a grateful steward toward others who still need to hear.

Putting Faith Into Action

  1. Start a weekly practice of recounting the gospel story in three sentences—Christ’s suffering, resurrection, and what that means for you—and use it when tempted to minimize the cross.
  2. Pray each morning for the Holy Spirit to open your heart and mind to the good news, and before conversations ask God for one specific person to share the gospel with this week.
  3. Honor spiritual predecessors and teachers: thank someone who pointed you to Christ, support a faithful preacher or missionary, and commit to mentoring a newer believer for six months.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you that the salvation many longed for is now ours. Give us the Spirit’s help to treasure this gift, to live as faithful stewards, and to share it with humility and boldness. Fill us with awe as we remember the prophets’ longing and the angels’ attention. Amen.

World English Bible • WEB

1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen ones who are living as foreigners in the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, that you may obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with his blood: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

4to an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance that doesn’t fade away, reserved in Heaven for you,

5who by the power of God are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved in various trials,

7that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes, even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—

8whom, not having known, you love. In him, though now you don’t see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy that is unspeakable and full of glory,

9receiving the result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

13Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober, and set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ—

14as children of obedience, not conforming yourselves according to your former lusts as in your ignorance,

15but just as he who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all of your behavior,

16because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

17If you call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judges according to each man’s work, pass the time of your living as foreigners here in reverent fear,

18knowing that you were redeemed, not with corruptible things like silver or gold, from the useless way of life handed down from your fathers,

19but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ,

20who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in this last age for your sake,

21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope might be in God.

22Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth through the Spirit in sincere brotherly affection, love one another from the heart fervently,

23having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and remains forever.

24For,

25but the Lord’s word endures forever.”
