2 Corinthians 5:11–17
11Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are revealed to God, and I hope that we are revealed also in your consciences.
12For we are not commending ourselves to you again, but speak as giving you occasion of boasting on our behalf, that you may have something to answer those who boast in appearance and not in heart.
13For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God. Or if we are of sober mind, it is for you.
14For the love of Christ compels us; because we judge thus: that one died for all, therefore all died.
15He died for all, that those who live should no longer live to themselves, but to him who for their sakes died and rose again.
16Therefore we know no one according to the flesh from now on. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no more.
17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

Reflection
Paul moves from the urgency of the gospel to the quiet power of what the gospel accomplishes in a believer’s life. He begins with motive — an awareness of God that governs how we persuade others and how we present ourselves. For Paul, persuasion is not about winning an argument or polishing an image; it is driven by the reverence of the Lord and by being accountable to him alone. That accountability frees us from needing human applause and frees our motives to be shaped by Christ’s love.
The heart of the passage explains why Christ’s death and resurrection change everything: because he died for all, those who trust him no longer live for themselves. That is not primarily a moral checklist but a reorientation of identity and purpose. If Christ’s love compels us, then our choices flow from gratitude and allegiance rather than from fear of failure, desire for approval, or self-preservation.
Paul also warns against measuring people by outward standards. Knowing someone “according to the flesh” means judging by appearances, resume, or reputation. When the gospel does its work, our vision changes: we see others not as static sums of past mistakes or impressive achievements but as people whose ultimate status is determined by Christ. This is a corrective both for how we treat others and for how we understand our own failures. The old categories — condemned or celebrated by human eyes — give way to a single reality: in Christ we are made new.
That newness is both present fact and unfolding process. To be a new creation means the old patterns are not erased by our willpower alone; they are broken where Christ’s life and Spirit are active. The “old things” have passed away, not by our pretending they never were, but by God’s transforming work. This brings hope to the weak and humility to the strong. Where we are most aware of our insufficiency, God’s renewing grace is most visible.
Practically, Paul’s teaching calls us to live with a new center. Instead of acting out of self-interest, we live in response to what Christ has done for us. Instead of sizing people up by surface measures, we practice gospel vision. Instead of hiding our weakness or manufacturing competence, we admit our need and let the new life in Christ show through. That is the strength of weakness: when we are honest about our limits, the new creation in us becomes the means of grace for others.
Putting Faith Into Action
- Start each morning with a two-minute confession and declaration: name one way you are tempted to live for yourself, ask forgiveness, and remind yourself of being in Christ before setting your daily goals.
- Choose one person this week you habitually judge by outward factors; pray for them daily, ask God to help you see them as a new creation, and offer one concrete act of kindness without commentary.
- When faced with a decision, pause and ask which choice reflects living to Christ rather than to self: then take one tangible step that shows allegiance to Christ (a sacrificial gift, a difficult conversation, or serving without recognition).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you that in you we are made new. Break the old patterns of living for ourselves, give us eyes to see others through the gospel, and empower us by your Spirit to live for you. Help our weakness to display your strength. Amen.

1For we know that if the earthly house of our tent is dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.
2For most certainly in this we groan, longing to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven,
3if indeed being clothed, we will not be found naked.
4For indeed we who are in this tent do groan, being burdened, not that we desire to be unclothed, but that we desire to be clothed, that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
5Now he who made us for this very thing is God, who also gave to us the down payment of the Spirit.
6Therefore we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord;
7for we walk by faith, not by sight.
8We are courageous, I say, and are willing rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.
9Therefore also we make it our aim, whether at home or absent, to be well pleasing to him.
10For we must all be revealed before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive the things in the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
18But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses, and having committed to us the word of reconciliation.
20We are therefore ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God were entreating by us: we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
21For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
